How to Know if Freelance Writing is Right for You

How to Know if Freelance Writing is Right for You

So, you want to be a freelance writer. You’ve heard it can be a great way to make money in your spare time or that you can work from home or anywhere there’s an internet connection and you’re ready to give it a try. Before you take the plunge there are a few important things to consider that can help you figure out if freelance writing is right for you.

You should become a freelance writer if:

1. You’re a self-starter

When you’re a freelance writer there’s no one around to tell you what to do and when to do it. Besides your virtual connection to your client (or if you’re under contract with a company to your team leader or editor), you’re completely solo. Often you’re just given guidelines or an outline and a deadline and that’s it.

Being a freelance writer can be a lot like being in business for yourself. When and where you complete your writing projects is completely up to you.

2. You like working independently

If you enjoy the feeling of being part of a group freelance writing may not be right for you. Freelance writing requires long hours completely alone in front of the computer. When you’re a freelance writer you’re responsible for all of your work from start to finish. If there are any questions about the content you create you’ll have to answer them and provide solutions on your own.

3. You enjoy writing

Believe it or not, not all people who take the leap into freelance writing actually like to write.
People choose to become freelance writers for a number of reasons. They may enjoy the freedom and flexibility freelance writing provides or they may like seeing the things they write in print but they may hate the writing process. Writing requires a person to have a certain degree of mastery of the rules governing style, grammar and punctuation. It often requires research and a degree of creativity. Writing also takes time. If all of these things are appealing to you then freelance writing may be perfect for you.

4. You’re responsible

When people hire you as a freelance writer they’re putting a very important part of their business in your hands. They often know the value of good writing and understand what professionally written content can do to elevate their business.

Websites and blogs understand that their reputation can rise or fall on the strength of the quality of the content they publish. What freelance writers create means a lot that’s why it’s important for writers to be responsible. Freelance writers must meet deadlines, produce high-quality work and communicate problems and concerns clearly.
